Heroic Nyck

Despite a collision during one of the heats (owing to which he also lost the advantage of his formidable pole position), Nyck De Vries managed to turn the situation to his advantage.

Starting in 16th position, he reached 5th position in the pre-final, before climbing on the second step of the podium! An excellent result and a good operation for the Championship.

The third round of the WSK – the top-level series with all the best international pilots – revealed a faster and more solid Nyck De Vries than ever. After conquering the pole position on the difficult Lonato circuit in Italy, he has revealed an increasingly evident burst of speed. It is at the centre of the group that he has shown all his talent during the final phase, multiplying his passes and making perfect starts.

This young Dutch pilot (he is only 13) commented his weekend. “I am very satisfied with my performance, as well as with that of my whole team. We only had one serious problem, a collision during a heat. The accident could have had serious consequences, but I came through it all right. During free practice, I had a good performance and I managed to set a very good lap during timed practice, which allowed me to obtain my second pole position this season. Then, the accident at the start of a qualifying heat not only pushed me back in 16th position in the pre-final starting grid, but also damaged my chassis. We had to use a different, slightly different chassis. That forced us to change the set-up to find the same level of competitiveness again”.

Motivated as usual and extremely focussed on the race, Nyck made a remarkable pre-final start and soon doubled several competitors. Positions stretched out in the group, but pilot De Vries, with his usual determination, continued his catching up, exploiting at best his Zanardi-XTR by Keijzer Racing. Starting fifth in the final, it didn’t take him long to reach the leading group.

I didn’t want to lose touch with the group, so it was important to do the best in the first turns, in order to try and conquer positions quickly. However, the first laps proved to be difficult, because it took the chassis a few laps to perform at its best. I reached the second position though, behind Maïsano”.

The two drivers drove at the same pace, so much so that De Vries was not in a position to attack his rival. “I set the best lap in the final, but he managed to keep the second of advantage conquered in the first laps”. With the victory scored at Muro Leccese in March and this second place, Nyck has reinforced his second position in the Championship and remains more than ever one of the favourites for the title.

Next round will be held at Sarno in July and it will be even more important. But before that, I want to prepare at best for the European Championship qualifying, which will be held in Sweden, at Göteborg”.

Nyck De Vries Charity Ambassador
The Dutch kart pilot has decided to join the ambassadors of the charity foundation “Right To Play”, together with many Olympic, paralympic and professional sportsmen and sportswomen. This organisation will help children and populations affected by war, poverty and diseases by developing humanitarian projects in over 20 countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Nyck shares these values based on respect, integrity, fair-play and cooperation and this is why he has taken the initiative of committing himself to help other children to gain access to education and to better healthcare.

A remarkable catching up

Even for a pilot who is five-time World Champion, each new karting race can be considered a new beginning. Davide Fore experienced it himself at Angerville, at the first meeting of the European KF1 Championship, on 3 and 4 May.

On the circuit where the Italian pilot conquered his latest world title, he hoped to win another top-level race. Unfortunately, the race proved to be much more difficult than he thought.

On Sunday evening, Davide Fore made a clear and realistic analysis of his weekend at Angerville. “When competition is so intense, you need to drive a spotless race to obtain good results. In my case, unfortunately, this was not possible. Once again, the qualifying round played a very important role. The ideal would have been to reach the top 10, but the time gaps were small and I finished 21st, just one tenth of a second away from the 12th position and two tenths away from the 4th position!

In the heats, the gap with the leaders became even smaller” Davide added. “Cleary, my objective was to climb up the ranking. This is what I did in heat A/B, when I recovered six positions. Unfortunately, in the other qualifying race, I had a collision at the start and I was forced to drive the whole race with a damaged front-wheel axle unit. Really frustrating!” Instead of recovering positions, Davide finished only 22nd before the first of the two finals.

There, I really did everything I could! I had worked a lot with the Maranello Team to find the right set-up for the Angerville track and our efforts were finally rewarded when I climbed up to 13th position”.

In the second final, the Italian champion went on with his catching up, using all his great experience to quickly recover positions in the group. “At the end of the race, the gap between me and the leaders was much smaller. I overtook several times and I would have certainly recovered a few more positions, if the race had been longer. Finally, after a difficult debut at this meeting, I finished the weekend with an eighth position, which I consider rather good. This allows me to score important points for the Championship”.

The cooperation between Maranello and Maxter finally showed its competitiveness at this European debut, because Davide was setting the same times as the pilots who reached the 2nd et 3rd steps of the podium. At the end of June at Mariembourg, on the circuit where Davide has often shown his formidable talent, he will do everything he can to obtain times more in line with his potential.

It is always better to start from the first rows of the grid, in order to avoid the collisions that are always more frequent at the centre of the group. Before the Belgian race, we will be holding a series of tests with the Maranello team and I believe they will be useful to quickly improve our 2008 results”.

I piloti?

Intrepid Driver Program “the fastest way to succeed”
Project, Progetto, ambizione, filosofia.

Intrepid Driver Program, the fastest way to succeed.

First podiums and victories in 2008

The beginning of the season gave Maranello the opportunity to assess its position among the most important karting teams at international level.

The quality of Italian materials, the reputation of its technical team and the results obtained in recent years have led many pilots to confide in Maranello for the year 2008. The first international events have been an important testing ground, with numerous red karts at the start. And, from a sports point of view, new podiums and victories added to the brand’s prize record.

Maranello is a young company, but it has been able to create a winning image, highly considered in the paddock. The reason? Commitment, constant innovation and development, a working environment appreciated by pilots, as well as transparency in the supply of materials, as Armando Filini likes to point out. “I insist on the fact that the company supplies the same material to all pilots who confide in us, whether they belong to an official team or not. We attach great importance to the quality of chassis and strive to provide the best service to pilots and help them obtain good performances”.

In January, Davide Fore stood out in KF1, since he was the fastest during collective tests organised by WSK in La Conca (Southern Italy), thus confirming the good job done by Maranello in winter.

Three weeks later, during the Winter Cup, the paddock of Lonato was crowded with over 40 Italian karts. On Sunday evening, Aaro Vainio won in KF3. “Winning at the beginning of the season is great”, said the young Finnish pilot. “I was quite confident after the pole won during official time qualifying. At the end, the kart had an excellent performance and I’m sure that’s just the beginning of an extremely successful season”. Italian Kevin Ceccon ranked 3rd, thus completing the good results obtained by the “men in red”!

Vainio and Ceccon played a leading role at Andrea Margutti Trophy in Parma as well. Ceccon won the pole and Vainio was able to win his semi-final and ranked 2nd in the final, just ahead of Ceccon! Maranello led in KF2 too, thanks to the brilliant victory by Czech Zdenek Groman. Also worth mentioning are other Maranello pilots, who did extremely well in 2008: Jony Wiman, Jacob Nortoft, Luke Wright in KF2, Kevin Giovesi, Russel Danzy, Sergei Sirotkin, Eduardo Cheever, David Da Luz in KF3 and many others.

The season has begun extremely well for Maranello”, confirmed Armando Filini. “We cannot rest on our laurels, though, and need to constantly improve. Karting is a demanding sport and we realised this in Muro Leccese during the WSK race, where the bad luck was with us, although we were one of the two best represented brands. The same is true for Davide Fore, who was always in the leading positions in KF1 at the Winter Cup, but had to withdraw in the final. This is sport and we will do our best in order to make 2008 as successful as possible”.

FFSA Karting Grand Prix is heading on the right

In very bad weather conditions, Karting Championship of France 2008 made its debut with the first Grand Prix of the season, in Lyon Saint Laurent de Mure. All the participants greatly appreciated the changes made to the Championship last autumn.

FFSA is adding a few more finishing touches to its formula to appeal pilots and make the competition more and more exciting for the next races.

Races are now held two days a week, with semi-finals and finals on Saturdays and Sundays respectively, thereby enabling spectacular overturning of the situation. Enhanced conviviality encouraged by FFSA was appreciated by everybody: breakfast offered every morning under the motor home, a permanently accessible space for race information, a plasma screen showing karting videos on demand or ongoing series times, all this was especially welcome when wind, rain or snow became heavier outside. Star Production Team covered the event, with a view to broadcasting it on television, but also to upload it online, on new Internet site ffsa.tv.

KF3 : 30 KF3 pilots ran in the same, single group. On Saturday, Bryan Laloux obtained the best official qualifying time and in the pre-final he started from the pole position, side by side with his compatriot Clemente Picariello; however, it was Brandon Maïsano who came off better. In the final, Brandon didn’t have the good setup to prevail and in the end Picariello made it, ahead of Mickael Heche and Jeffrey Schmidt.

The clock was reset on Sunday morning. Maïsano obtained the best time during official time qualifying, started in pole position in the pre-final, did the best lap during the race and won. Jeffrey Schmidt and Mathieu Jaminet completed the trio.

Guillaume De Ridder took advantage of the confusion that reigned at the start of the final to grab the pole position. Clemente Picariello started 23rd but made an incredible recovery and finished 2nd. Adrien Leidinger was on the third step of the podium.

Picariello leads the Championship with 90 points, followed by Mickael Heche, 57 points and Guillaume De Ridder, 50 points.

KF2 : 40 pilots present were divided into 2 groups for official time qualifying. Clément Bluy and Paul-Loup Chatin won the first and second group respectively. Bluy dominated his semi-final from the beginning to the end.

Bailly finished 2nd and Lacaze 3rd. In the other semi-final, Julien Deschamps took the lead of the race, followed by Guillaume Barbarin. Vincenzo Schillaci was 3rd. After a difficult start, Robin Frinjs won the final, followed by Sébastien Bailly and Sami Luka.

Sunday was another day. Olivier Tilkin obtained the best time with 57’’359 and Clément Bluy conquered the pole in his group. Tilkin started at the front of the grid in the 1st semi-final. Julien Deschamps was 2nd, followed by Robin Frinjs, yesterday’s winner.

In the other series, Clément Bluy started from the pole followed by Kenny Vermeylen and Sébastien Bailly. In the final, Belgian Olivier Tilkin confirmed his talent and won ahead of Barbarin and Vermeylen.

Bailly now leads the Championship with 62 points, followed by Tilkin and Vermeylen at 52 points. There are 4 Belgians in the first 4 places.

KZ2 : On Saturday morning, Enzo Zéfirini dominated official time qualifying and won his semi-final, followed by Nuvolini and Varutti. Grosso was the winner of 2nd semi-final, while Abbasse finished 2nd and Ryall 3rd. In the final, there was a superb victory by Anthony Abbasse in his first race on gearbox 125! Eric Ramon and Emilien Grosso went on the podium.

On Sunday morning, Anthony Abbasse, best after official time qualifying, emerged during the very first lap. Two Swiss, Kevin Lüdi and Ken Allemann won the semi-final, followed by Mike Courquin.

The last semi-final was dominated by Pierre-Etienne Chaumat, while Grosso finished 2nd followed by Ramon. During the final, Lüdi and Allemann retired with mechanical problems, leaving Grosso to precede Chaumat and Morgan Weber.

In the Championship, Emilien Grosso is 1st with 90 points, followed by Anthony Abbasse, 70 points and Pierre-Etienne Chaumat and Enzo Zéfirini, both with 52 points.

The age of renewal begins in Lyon

After a tremendously successful season in 2007, the time has now come to inaugurate season 2008 of FFSA Karting Grand Prix, at Actua Lyon racetrack.

It is a season under the sign of renewal stimulated by the many changes implemented by FFSA in the organisation of Championship of France 2008. Two weeks before the opening of the season, this new race format has already attracted a number of competitors exceptionally high for a national championship in Europe.

In 2008, FFSA Karting Grand Prix races will adopt a new formula, in order to make the competition more intense and more attractive for fans, with finals on Saturdays and Sundays. Procedures have been simplified to increase the time available for trials. With these changes, FFSA intends to return the Karting Grand Prix to the place it deserves among national championships. The first sign of its higher visibility can be detected in the very high number of foreign pilots taking part in the competition.

Actua Lyon Kart Métropole racetrack in Saint Laurent de Mure is in one of the most beautiful karting sites in France, with 4 tracks over an area of more than 16 hectares.

The track is 1250m long and 8m wide and its layout is very challenging, fast and sinuous. Recent improvements to the paddock have made it even more comfortable to use. There is also a large gathering place for meetings and marketing or media activities, which was dubbed «The village square» last July, at previous Grand Prix.

Due to an insufficient number of participants, FFSA has decided not to include KF1 in its 2008 programme, in order to focus, rather, on the promotion class. In Lyon, 8 to 10 year-old minikart drivers will have a chance to show how talented they are. In this way, the category will get a great visibility boost. Therefore, it will be KF2 to play the leading role. There will be the protagonists of Championship of France 2007, together with title holder Charles Lacaze, his possible successor Loïc Réguillon, and number 3 William Benedetti. Together with Julien Deschamps, fifth at KF2 World Cup, this is the quartet composing the «Equipe de France FFSA Karting» in KF2. However, they will not be the only candidates to victory. In fact, Kevin Mourey or Clément Bluy are also competitive contenders, together with category senior Marc Léon, our gentleman driver.

A nice group of Belgian pilots will be part of the match as well, with Sébastien Bailly, champion of France Junior, Sami Luka and Mickael Albert, among the most awaited.

In KF3, Brandon Maïsano -with great experience in this category- will be chasing for a title but his main opponent might be Belgian Guillaume De Ridder. Excellent results could also come from former drivers of Cadet category Mathieu Jaminet and Pascal Belmaaziz.

KZ2 gets together a nice assortment of possible champions, equally divided between experts of 125 gearbox karts and fans of KF1, who can find here a nice replacement solution. Thomas Mich will fight hard to win the title he could have conquered last year. He will have to watch out for experienced pilots like Mathias Gallepe, Enzo Zéfirini, Pierre Etienne Chaumat, Thierry Lolmède, Eric Ramon or Stephen Nuvolini. Swiss Ken Allemann will also be a tough contender. Let us not forget, of course, our 3 Equipe de France pilots Anthony Abbasse, Alban Varutti and Norman Nato, who are talented enough to fight for victory in the most challenging category of Championship 2008.

2G Racing is ready to start

After the very recent creation of the karting race team, 2G Racing shifts into high gear and begins its development activity.

2G Racing settled in Lonato for the Winter Cup, with a brand new truck and facility.

With high, but realistic ambitions for a first race, Philippe Gazzurelli, the boss, decided to come to Italy to validate the technical solutions adopted by his team and to do some life-size road testing under real race conditions. His son Gianni took care of the track testing on his FA Kart frame, in KF1.

Concerning the engines, François Convers had carte blanche to explore all resources of Vortex mechanics, due to be heavily exploited by the magician of Saint-Etienne, who is going to start soon his preparation. If needed, he can refer to AC.MO, Philippe Gazzurelli’s company, which is able to produce any kind of metal part on site, in the shortest delay.

Concerning the frames, 2G Racing made significant progress in its knowledge of FA Kart equipment. As team manager, François Convers listened to his pilot in order to guide the team job. And little by little, adjustments were made. On Monday, they went on with tire testing and at the end times were close to those of the fastest pilots.

Therefore, a positive result for the team’s first time participation in the big karting circus. 2G Racing has already equipped itself with a repair truck and soon another investment will be made in this field. The facility will comfortably host 4 pilots.

2G Racing is the French importer of FA Kart and Vortex official dealer. Philippe Gazzurelli is currently creating a network of dealers well established in their region and he is open to work with other countries.

However, 2G Racing is also and mostly a race service, which can sell or rent Vortex engines prepared by François Convers with full racetrack assistance. This service is available to all pilots, regardless of the frame brands they use in national championships. For CIK-FIA races, 2G Racing reserves the possibility to motorize Tonykart frames only. Apart from this limitation, 2G Racing prepares and rents KF2, KF3 and KZ to anybody.

2G Racing proposals are tailor made to each customer’s needs in order to provide a customised service: use of 2G Racing facility, equipment care, turnkey races, individual renting at the race ... Everything is possible.

For the time being, 2G Racing is only present at FFSA Grand Prix, but in the near future it will make its debut also on the international circuit. WSK will be followed by 2G Racing in KF1, starting from la Conca. The programme will be developed according to demand and it might also include Belgium, whose championship takes place in autumn.
